Cary debated whether or not to tell James the truth—that she had no plan because the wizard knew too much about her. And the wizard probably knew she was involved now because he’d apparently been spying on them.

Despite Sheldon’s spells still working.

But if the spells were still working…

“I still don’t know how everyone is finding you here,” she said to Sheldon, turning a little to look at him while still keeping James in her peripheral vision. She didn’t have to worry too much about that because she knew Deacon was keeping a close eye on the Master vampire. Still, she hated when the bad guys surprised her, even if they couldn’t hurt her while doing it.

Sheldon shrugged. “I paid good money for the spells, and the vampire said they’re still working. They were designed to hide me here, hide me from anyone seeing me come in and out. Keep the hallway creepy feeling so no mundanes stumble through.”

Cary considered how Sheldon had been discovered here in the last few days.

Her bosses must have found him with premonitions because that’s what they did. She was pretty sure Zorianthus had found a way to scry into the building, though she hadn’t asked Sheldon if Zorianthus was capable of that yet. The witches had found him through a vision during spellwork.

“Do your spells prevent people from seeing you through…premonitions? Scrying? Did you think of those things?”

“Wizards and shifters don’t scry, so no,” Sheldon said, his lip lifting in a slight snarl.

Cary was surprised by the show of emotion. More and more of that was slipping through his hollow façade.

“And you’re not a witch, so I didn’t think you’d scry,” Sheldon said.

“I don’t. Good guess. But I have a best friend who can.”

Who it never occurred to her to ask to scry for Sheldon. Why hadn’t she ever just asked Angie to scry for the little shit? Rookie mistake. Potentially deadly mistake in her seventh year.

She sighed and shook her head. Stupid, stupid oversight.

Deacon’s hand settled at the base of her spine, rubbing in gentle circles. Near her ear, for her only, he murmured, “Jaxer didn’t think of it either, remember.”

She frowned up at him. “How did you know what I was thinking?” That had been too complex for a simple smelled-her-emotions analysis.

“I just realized we might have asked her, too,” he whispered.

She let out a long breath. So, she wasn’t the only one who hadn’t thought of it. And he was right, Jaxer had known Angie longer than Cary had known her, yet he hadn’t asked her to look for either Sheldon or the wizard. He must have assumed she couldn’t. Angie hadn’t volunteered to scry for him, and she’d been offering help, so maybe she couldn’t have found Sheldon with her scrying bowl, even if she thought the wizard might have spied on him that way.

Hell, Jaxer might have asked and she told him she couldn’t for some reason.

Questions for later.

Argh, so many questions.

But first, she had to save Sheldon from Zorianthus.
